Add/Edit a New Test Step

Before a new test plan can be created, the new test steps must be entered.  There are 5 layers to test steps:

  • Test Category
  • Test Case
  • Test Step
  • Sub Test Step
  • Test Check

A "Parent" is the layer above the step you are entering.  So a Test Check would have a Test Step/Sub Test Step as a parent.  A Sub Test Step would have a Test Step as the parent.  A Test Step would have a Test Case as the Parent.  A Test Case would have a Test Category as the parent.  A Test Category would NOT have a parent.  There can be multiple Test Steps within a Test Case and there can be multiple Test Cases within a Test Category.  To help track them, the sub-steps are numbered consecutively (NOTE:  5.1 --> 5.1.1 --> 5.1.1.1 etc).  Sub Test Steps are optional and not all Test Cases have both Test Steps and Sub Test Steps.  Currently our DB goes 5 layers deep but there is the opportunity to layer them further if needed.

Navigating the List/Re-Ordering

The ordering of the test steps list appears unusual however once you understand the logic, it makes sense.  Essentially Test Categories are always #1 when viewing the whole list.  Test Cases are ordered numerically within Test Categories. Test Steps are ordered numerically within Test Cases.  Sub Test Steps are ordered numerically within Test Steps.   Test Checks are ordered numerically within Test Steps or Sub Test Steps.  And so on.  So in the example provided below, that is why you see several #1's in a row.   Outgoing Calls is the Test Category, 5.1 Abandon Calls is Test Case #1 (within this test category), 5.1.1 Abandon call, initiated & ended at HFM is Test Step #1 (within this test case), 5.1.1.1 Initiate an Outgoing call from HFM is Sub Test Case #1 (within this test step) and so on.  The small blue arrows can be used to manually change the order of the steps.  If a step needs to be moved drastically, simply changing the number in the "ordering" column is possible by selecting a decimal that falls between the 2 steps it should be placed between.  Then click the Save icon at the top of the ordering column.  To change the order of the Test Categories, use the "Select Max Levels" to select "1" to see all the Test Categories.  Then they can be adjusted using the blue arrows or the ordering column as described above.  NOTE:  Moving a parent moves all "children" steps associated to it.
